خلال فترة الكساد الكبير في الولايات المتحدة اﻷمريكية، يروي الفيلم قصة الإخوة (بوندوانت) الثلاثة المعروفين بسمعتهم السيئة وجرائمهم الشهيرة في ولاية فيرجينا وعمليات التهريب التي قاموا بها، إلى أن يأتي نائب شرطة جديد طامع في نسبة من أرباحهم، وينوي تحويل حياتهم إلى جحيم.
بعدما ارتقى "رئيس" ليصبح زعيم إمبراطورية تهريب الكحوليات في "غوجارات" في الثمانينيّات، يحاول أن يوازن بين حياة الجريمة ومساعدة أهل مدينته.
تدور أحداث الفيلم في ولاية ميسيسيبي خلال ثلاثينيات القرن العشرين (1930م)، حيث يُحكم على رجلين بالسجن المؤبد لجريمة لم يرتكباها. ومن داخل جدران السجن القاسية، تنشأ بينهما صداقة عميقة تمتد لعدة عقود، تمثل رمزًا للأمل والصمود وسط الظلم والحرمان.

After nearly a century of activism, Prohibition was intended to improve the lives of all citizens by protecting individuals, families and society at large from the devastating effects of alcohol abuse; but paradoxically it made millions of people rethink their definition of morality.
Based on the book of the same name by Alex Shearer; a new political party called the "Good for You" (abbreviated as GFY) which comes into power and bans chocolate. Two kids named Smudger Moore and Huntley Hunter want to get their chocolate back. They begin by selling bootleg chocolate, and go on to join an underground resistance organization.
