تدور قصة الفيلم حول شاب مخترع يسافر إلى إحدى المدن الكبرى في دنيا الآليات وينضم إلى الشركة التي طالما يحلم بها، إلا أنه عقب ذلك يكتشف فساد إدارتها الجديدة مما يتعارض مع كل أحلامه وآماله.

أُعيد مراهق الثمانينيات مارتي ماكفلي بطريق الخطأ إلى عام 1955 ، مما أدى عن غير قصد إلى تعطيل الاجتماع الأول لوالديه وجذب اهتمام والدته العاطفي. يجب على مارتي إصلاح الضرر الذي لحق بالتاريخ من خلال إحياء الرومانسية بين والديه ، وبمساعدة صديقه المخترع غريب الأطوار دوك براون - يعود إلى عام 1985.

يعلم مارتي مكفلي بأن حياة صديقة الدكتور إيميت براون في خطر ، بينما يستمتع براون بالحياة الهادئة في عام 1885، فيقرر السفر إلى الماضي لإنقاذ صديقه. ويتلقى مارتي رسالة من د. إيميت تعود عمرها للقرن الماضي، يخبره فيها أنه قرر العودة بالزمن إلى عام 1885، وأنه قد خبأ آلته بمنجم مهجور خارج المدينة.
