قصة حياة الزاهدة الصوفية (رابعة العدوية) منذ أن فرت إلى البصرة؛ حيث أصبحت جارية للسيد (عصام الدين)، ثم مقتله على يد السيد (خليل) لتصبح جارية له، ثم لقائها بالمتصوف (ثوبان) الذي يدلها على الطريق الصحيح، وأن حياتها الحالية كلها لهو وعبث، وقرارها أن تترك كل ذلك، وصمودها أمام تعذيب خليل لها، حتى وفاتها.

يتناول الفيلم قصة صداقة غير مألوفة بين شاب يهودي يتيم يعيش في باريس، يُدعى مومو (يؤدي دوره بيير بول مرسييه)، وصاحب متجر عربي مسن يُدعى إبراهيم (يؤدي دوره عمر شريف). يتطور العلاقة بينهما بشكل غير متوقع، حيث يتعلم مومو الكثير من الحياة والحب والصداقة من إبراهيم.

تدور أحداث الفيلم في قالب رومانسي درامي حول قيس وليلي اللذان يتحديان مجتمعهما وظروفه القاسية في سبيل استمرار حبهما.
