تتكشف الأحداث على مدار إحدى الليالي الصادمة في باريس بترتيب زمني عكسي حيث تعرضت أليكس الجميلة للاغتصاب والضرب بوحشية من قبل شخص غريب في النفق. يتولى صديقها وعشيقها السابق زمام الأمور بأنفسهم من خلال توظيف مجرمين لمساعدتهما في العثور على المغتصب حتى يتمكنوا من الانتقام. فحص جميل ورهيب في نفس الوقت للطبيعة المدمرة للسبب والنتيجة ، وكيف يدمر الوقت كل شيء.

مارك رينتون، مدمن هيروين يعاني من أوهام وأفكار سيئة ويحاول التوقف عن الإدمان برفقة أصدقائه غير الموثوق بهم: سيك بوي، بيغبي، سباد وتومي. كما لديه علاقة مع ديان قاصر. بعد نقاهته ونقله من إدنبرة إلى لندن، يكتشف مارك أنّه لا مفرّ من حياته السابقة حين يظهر بيغبي فجأة عند باب شقته، ويتبعه صبٍّ مريض.
