تدور الأحداث في مقاطعة كامبريا في الشمال الإنجليزي البارد، في منزل قديم واسع الأرجاء في منطقة ريفية جبلية في القرن التاسع عشر. حيث تقع المؤلفة إديث كاشينج في حيرة بين حبها لصديق طفولتها وإغواء رجل جديد، وتكتشف أن زوجها الجذاب السير توماس شارب الذي تزوجته مؤخرًا يخفي كثيرًا من الأسرار حول المنزل الذي انتقلا إليه، منزل يبدو كما لو كان حيًا يتنفس، ينزف، ولا ينسى!
