عندما يختفي جميع الأطفال من نفس الفصل بشكل غامض في نفس الليلة وفي نفس الوقت تمامًا، يتساءل المجتمع عن من أو ما الذي يقف وراء اختفائهم.

يسافر عدد من الأصدقاء إلى السويد لدراسة مهرجان صيفي يُقام كل تسعين عامًا في مسقط رأس أحدهم النائي. وما يبدأ كعطلة حالمة في مكان لا تغيب فيه الشمس، سرعان ما يتحوّل إلى كابوس مظلم، إذ يدعوهم السكان الغامضون للمشاركة في طقوسهم الاحتفالية المقلقة.

بعد تتبع أصل محنة مقلقة خارقة للطبيعة إلى مقبرة أسلاف عائلة ثرية، يقوم فريق من اشهر خبراء الخوارق بنقل الرفات - وسرعان ما يكتشفون ما يحدث لأولئك الذين يجرؤون على العبث بالقبر الخطأ.

تشرع عائلة (جراهام) في كشف ألغاز موت جدتهم المنعزلة، والتي - حتى بعد رحيلها - تُلقي ظلالًا مُظلمة على الأسرة، خاصًة حفيدتها المراهقة صاحبة الجاذبية الاستثنائية (تشارلي).. يتلاشى السلام من محيط الأسرة بعد سيطرة الرعب القاتم عليهم؛ مما يدفع الأم إلى الغوص في عالم أكثر إظلامًا للهروب من مصيرهم الحالك الذي توارثوه.

تدفع اليأس راهبتين إلى القيام بطرد الأرواح الشريرة، وهو ما لا ينبغي لأي راهبة أن تحاول القيام به. ومع وجود طفل ممسوس تحت رحمة الشر ومعارضة الكنيسة الكاثوليكية، تقوم الراهبتان بأداء الطقوس المحرمة الخطيرة بنفسيهما، مما يعرض روحيهما الخالدتين لخطر جسيم. يتعين عليهما مواجهة التكلفة المروعة لأفعالهما التدنيسية، لكن يبقى هدف واحد: يجب إنقاذ الصبي بأي ثمن.
