رجل أعمال شاب يدعى إدوارد لويس يذهب إلى (لوس أنجلوس) ليعقد عدة صفقات مهمة لشركته ، وهناك يقابل فتاة الليل فيفان ، ويطلب منها المبيت معه لليلة ، لكن الليلة تجر أخرى ، ليجد نفسه في النهاية واقعا في غرامها ، تؤثر في حياته بشكل أو بآخر ، ويؤثر في حياتها هو الآخر ، حتى أنها تقرر بعد أن يفترقا ترك مهنتها ، وأن تتجه للدراسة لتصبح شخصا أفضل ، أما هو فلم يستطع السفر وتركها بعد أن تعلق قلبه بها ، فيقرر العودة مرة أخرى رغم كل شيء .

عندما يفر مهندس معماري صاحب رؤية وزوجته من أوروبا بعد الحرب في عام 1947 لإعادة بناء إرثهما ويشهدا ميلاد الولايات المتحدة الحديثة، تتغير حياتهما إلى الأبد على يد عميل غامض وثري.
