تدور أحداث الفيلم في إنجلترا خلال القرن السادس عشر (عصر النهضة)، وتحديداً في بلدة ستراتفورد. تركز القصة على أغنيس (زوجة ويليام شكسبير) وعلاقتها بزوجها وأطفالها، بعيداً عن أضواء المسرح في لندن.
