Film je satkan od dvije različite priče čiji su središnji likovi, oko kojih se radnja vrti, Susan Morrow i Tony Hastings. U prvom dijelu pratimo priču žene Susan kojoj bivši muž pošalje rukopis romana na reviziju. Taj neupečatljivi događaj ju potakne na preispitivanje braka koji je završio prije više od 20 godina. Drugi dio filma prati upravo događaje iz spomenutog rukopisa naslova Nocturnal Animals prema kojem je i film dobio ime. U središtu je Tony čiji se obiteljski odmor od uživanja pretvori u nasilje. Kim Basinger glumi ulogu bogate Teksašanke i majke Susan Morrow, a Michael Shannon glumi detektiva koji istražuje nemile događaje koji su se odvili na obiteljskom odmoru Tonyja Hastingsa...
