A girl returns from a trip out of the country and is given a strip-search for drugs when she re-enters Switzerland. Lacking a place to stay, she looks up an old friend of hers and stays with him, working to pay for food for both of them. In the casual manner of such arrangements, several more people enter the scene to stay: a rich kid who has been disinherited and a girl who is an escaped convict. The working girl has been hiding some of her wages in her clothes, and the two young men steal the money, buy a car, and hare off looking for excitement.
In this film, the wife of a renowned doctor becomes ill with multiple sclerosis. Trying to spare her beloved husband the ordeal, the woman turns to a family friend, Dr. Lang, to help end her life. When this doctor declines to help with the assisted suicide, however, she is forced to turn to her husband. After much soul-searching, Dr. Heyt, her husband, assists in her suicide. The act, however, is witnessed by a chambermaid, who reports him to the police. Dr. Heyt is put on trial for murder and, at first, Dr. Lang testifies against him in court. Soon, however, Dr. Lang is faced with a similar case in his professional practice and this, along with Dr. Heyt’s impassioned performance in court, convinces Dr. Lang that, in some instances, mercy killing may be the right thing to do.
Business executive Nick Porter starts an affair with landscape architect Holly while jogging on his way to see his half-brother Benjamin 'Ben' Goldman, a reclusive author who inherited an estate from his father, also an author. Recommended by Nick, Holly comes to renovate the garden for Ben, whose aloof attitude bugs her, but actually she's his first love. Nick learns this and that Ben has terminal cancer but refuses treatment, feeling his life has no meaning, so Nick pushes Holly to pretend to be in love with Ben, who learns the truth in the worst possible way at the worst possible time.
Benny and Franz are thieves. The brothers steal jeans in shopping centers and boutique stores. Their routine involves a scam in which Benny, the younger of the two, has to play the ungrateful role of the decoy. When they encounter an overstrung shop assistant, it becomes clear to Franz that Benny’s not going to let himself be pushed around very much longer.

The young policewoman is highly motivated in her operations against drug and arms trafficking. In the process, she encounters abuses of power and encounters right-wing extremist attitudes in the police force too.
