The story of the film takes place in 1929 in a model prison providing a kind of reflection how society works out there. Udvardi, the weakling and indulgent director is experimenting with putting in practice a kind of pseudo-humanist utopia about the institution of a 'civilised prison'.

Gergő’s mother is obsessed with having a grandchild. She has a serious heart disease and has only days left to live. To give his mum some joy during her final hours, Gergő asks his neighbour Saci, who is five months pregnant, to visit his mother in hospital with him and tell her that she is carrying his child. It all goes smoothly, but a new heart arrives, and his mum is operated. Therefore, Gergő and Saci are forced to play the roles of the loving couple.

Prof. Laurent Akush from the Institute of Geophysics is working on a device that can be used to locate coal underground. For successful work he needs a tube XCX13, it is available in the West, but foreign firms sabotage the supply of the device. In his institute there is an enemy engaged in sabotage, but the professor does not believe in enemies. Laurent Akush receives an invitation to the international geological congress in Berlin, there he hopes to meet an old American friend, the scientist McLane. He takes with him his assistant Ferenc Ervish and a young Stakhanovite worker, Ishvan Kadosh. The professor does not yet know that in Berlin, Colonel Thompson of American intelligence is preparing a trap for him.

In November 1956, many people fled to Tito in Yugoslavia and were confronted with socialism, which they called "man-faced". The film's heroes find temporary refuge on a Bunyevac farmer's farm and await their fate there, as well as in nearby Subotica, in a long-simmering family and social environment, under the supervision of local internal security officers. One of them, a participant in the 1942 massacre in Baška, later a carpenter, now posing as a revolutionary, tries to blackmail his host with old memories. A naive young man of faith tries to clear up the gendarme's past, his son, a Stalinist, and his role in the revolution, as does the penitent intellectual.

A kockásfülű nyúl (English: "The rabbit with checkered ears") is a 26-episode Hungarian animated children's series produced from 26 August 1977 on in the studios of PannóniaFilm. Created by the acclaimed children's literature writer and graphic artist Veronika Marék and animator Zsolt Richly, its protagonist, the rabbit with checkered ears quickly became one of the most prolific mascots of Hungarian animation.
