William McKeown: Between Heaven and Earth 2016

1

‘William McKeown: Idir Neamh agus Talamh’ is a meditation on the work of Irish artist William McKeown (1962-2011), who developed a body of work that has had a radical and fundamental effect on our understanding of the age-old relationship of art to nature, steering our attention not to the distant sky but to the air around us, to the openness of nature, the feeling of our emergence into light and our proximity to the infinite.

Radical Hearts

Radical Hearts 2023

1

Combining talking head testimony with elegantly recreated scenes, this extraordinary, daring documentary tells the previously unheard story of how women who loved other women contributed to the fight for Irish independence from the British Empire. A vital contribution to charting an essential gay history of Ireland, Croíthe Radacacha (which is translated as ‘radical hearts’) depicts lesbians at the heart of the Irish revolution as uncompromising in their politics, committed to feminism, socialism and equal rights. Many would take arms in the struggle and many would die. Ciara Hyland’s film nobly revives their memory and acknowledges their courage.

The film, with a voice-over in Irish, presents the activities of students who come to St. Brigid’s Irish college to learn about Irish language and Irish culture. While they are there to study Irish the students also enjoy many leisure activities during their stay. The views of the local countryside and contact with nature are a big attraction for students raised in the city and we see a group of young people swimming in a sea pool and playing football in a field. Others sit around a dinner table listening to a Seanchaí (traditional Irish storyteller) telling a story, but the high point of the summer is the céilí, where students overcome their shyness and develop a sense of camaraderie.

The Killarney Echo 1970

1

A dramatic recreation of the Victorian era tour of Killarney's lakes. There are six people aboard a boat, two silent musicians, two boatmen speaking Irish, two women, English. One boatman's brother is on the run from the police, one of the ladies has lost her wedding ring. Macalla Chill Áirne, as well as being a recreation of a Victorian era tour of Killarney, culminating in a musical performance by the Eagle's Nest mountain, also echos conflict and delves into the chasms that appear when cultures clash. The Victorian tour of old ended with the loud report of a cannon resounding through the surrounding wild. In loving memory of Séan Garvey, ar dheis dé go raibh a anam dílis.
