A modern businessman surrounded by all the trappings of success, picks up a beautiful woman who is hitchhiking along a lonely stretch of road in the south. Quiet, mysterious, the woman is an artist on the way to Meðalland to sketch. Always ready to take advantage of an opportunity, the young man adjusts his itinerary to help the beautiful artist, and with luck, he thinks, help himself add another notch to his sexual belt. But all is not what it seems in this world. The question arises as to whether all the expensive aids of modern affluent society can help him avoid what appear to be forces that transcend time - or is it all imagination, or hallucination, or both?

Vala, a young filmmaker, is working on a documentary about the writer Ragnheiður Jónsdóttir. Vala is editing the film, looking into Ragnheiður's books and examining footage related to her, including an old interview with Ragnheiður that she listens to on video. Ragnheiður's books about Þóra frá Havmmur are particularly dear to Vala's heart, and she imagines scenes and events from the books as if she were Þóra herself. Suddenly, Ragnheiður comes to life on the screen and starts talking to Vála, answering various nagging questions that are on her mind.

She is an observer when she watches her parents argue and other kids play. She has no friends and other kids often laugh at her. That causes her to shut off and makes her shy and afraid to become visible to others. But when she sees a classmate bullied by two older boys, she is the only one who takes a stand and causes other kids to acknowledge her. She overcomes her shyness and fear.
