On a perfect summer night in a perfect summer house, Björk introduces her new boyfriend to her sister.

The film begins in the early hours of the morning of January 23rd 1973. A mile long fissure had ripped itself open on the outskirt of the fishing village on Heimaey, a small island of the Vestmannaeyjar group, off the South Coast of Iceland. Glowing ash and molten lava was spewed over the sleeping town. We see the evacuation of the 500 inhabitants, both by air and by sea. We witnes unbelievable scenes of bellowing craters, flowing lava, burning and collapsing buildings. We learn of the agony and uncertainty of people made homeless, and of the measures taken by the Civil Defence to deal with a disaster of an enormity rarely faced by so small a nation.

Joe, fed up with his in-laws, runs away from home. The film is mainly based on interviews with 37 foreigners from 9 countries who come from the world of art, sport, business and politics. Many humorous questions and interesting topics arise when the Icelandic nation is examined through the eye of the foreigner: Do foreigners think of Reykjavík as Bangkok of the north? Are the Icelanders an isolated and inbred nation? Or rather special and like no other? Is Icelandic inventiveness fit for export? Is the "pure and unspoiled" nation itself environmentally friendly?

This film is about a ten year old girl, Edda, who is taking part, for the first time, in the famous Icelandic horse tournament at Hella. Together with her girlfriend, the two children travel on horseback over mountains and rivers to reach Hella, some 100 km South of Reykjavík. After a two day journey they reach their destination where over 5,000 people have gathered for the tournament. Edda has been practicing her riding for over a year and now the big day has finally come.
