Kastljós is a high-rated Icelandic news magazine and talk show on the Icelandic national television channel RÚV. Sigmar Guðmundsson is the current editor and primary host of the show. The show is broadcast live five nights a week, Monday through Friday, at 7:35 p.m.

Spaugstofan is an Icelandic comedy group, formed in 1985, best known for their namesake weekly Saturday night sketch comedy show that has been broadcast, with breaks, and under various names, on the public television channel Sjónvarpið, and later on Stöð 2, since 1989. The show is the highest rated regular program on Icelandic television. Generally, the sketches satirize public events of the past week, or the exploits of recurring characters in the show. Spaugstofan's current lineup consists of actors Örn Árnason, Karl Ágúst Úlfsson, Pálmi Gestsson and Sigurður Sigurjónsson. Randver Þorláksson was a part of the original cast but left before the 2007-2008 season. Before Randver left, the lineup had remained more or less unchanged since the group was formed. Randver's leaving the program proved very controversial in Iceland, especially as he made it clear he was not resigning of his own will, and no reason was publicly given for his departure, other than that it would make room for new guest actors in each episode. The comedian Laddi starred with the group in its earliest years.

Fréttir, is the principal nightly television news program of the Icelandic public television channel RÚV. The program has been broadcast since the channel was launched in 1966 and is the second most watched news program in Iceland. The show airs at 7 p.m. with news coverage for about 25 minutes followed by sports for about 5 minutes.

Idol stjörnuleit is Iceland's version of the British reality series Pop Idol. The show allows the people of Iceland—through telephone voting—to select the winner of several televised singing contests, following the same format as Pop Idol. The show airs on Stöð 2, three seasons have been finished so far with the fourth season currently being aired. It is hosted by Jói and Simmi. The judges of Idol - Stjörnuleit seasons 1 and 2 were: ⁕Bubbi Morthens, locally renowned pop singer ⁕Sigríður Beinteinsdóttir, radio DJ in Reykjavík ⁕Þorvaldur Bjarni Þorvaldsson, #1 music producer in Iceland and guitarist for rock band Todmobile For season 3, Þorvaldur decided to leave and was replaced by 2 new judges making a total of four. ⁕Páll Óskar, Iceland's first dance artist and an openly gay activist ⁕Einar Bárðarson, entrepreneur, artist manager and songwriter After more than three years absent from Icelandic Television, Idol stjörnuleit returned for its fourth season in early 2009 with Jói and Simmi returning as hosts but with a complete new panel of judges consisting of: ⁕Björn Jörundur Friðbjörnsson, singer and actor ⁕Selma Björnsdóttir, two times representant of Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest

Gettu betur is an Icelandic team quiz show, broadcast on public television channel RÚV. Each team consists of three students from each of Iceland's gymnasiums. Two teams play against each other in each episode. Two preliminary rounds are broadcast on radio station Rás 2, followed by televised quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds on RÚV. Thirty schools participated in the 2011 season. The current host is Edda Hermannsdóttir. Gettu betur was first held in 1986. Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík has won the contest seventeen times overall, first in 1988, and then eleven times in a row, from 1993 to 2003, from 2007 to 2010 and in 2012. The only other school to win more than once is Akureyri Junior College, with three wins.

The eighteen-year-old Kolbeinn lives with his grandmother and grandfather and dreams of becoming the best in football, but that dream goes further away when he does not make it into the main team. He sets a goal to join the team next year, but many obstacles in his personal life stand in his way.

This is the Icelandic equivalent of The Office, with a much more interesting twist: the protagonist is a woman.
