Film „Nákaza“ sleduje rychlé šíření smrtícího vzduchem přenosného viru, který nemocné zabíjí během několika dnů. S rychlým šířením epidemie se lékaři po celém světe snaží najít lék a minimalizovat paniku, která se šíří ještě rychleji, než samotný virus. V americkém Centru pro kontrolu a prevenci nemocí dochází k mobilizaci všech výzkumných pracovníků, kteří se snaží rozluštit kód unikátního patogenu, který neustále dále mutuje. Jak postupně narůstá počet mrtvých a lidé se v kolabující společnosti snaží ochránit sebe samotné a své nejbližší, jeden aktivista a blogger začne tvrdit, že veřejnost nedostává pravdivé informace o skutečném dění, čímž vyvolá epidemii paranoie a strachu stejně nakažlivou jako původní virus. Obyčejní lidé se zároveň snaží přežít ve společnosti, která se prakticky zhroutila.

V budoucí společnosti, kterou zpustošila nemoc -- a donutila přeživší žít v podzemí -- je vězeň poslán zpátky v čase, aby shromáždil informace o viru, který vyhubil většinu lidstva.

Pořekadlo, že cesta do pekla bývá dlážděna dobrými úmysly, platí v tomto příběhu přímo ukázkově. Mladý vědec Will Rodman (James Franco) vyvíjí lék proti Alzheimerově nemoci, kterou trpí i jeho otec (John Lithgow). Slibný výzkum se ovšem zadrhává kvůli nežádoucím vedlejším účinkům, které vykazují pokusní živočichové po aplikaci léčebné látky. Zklamaný vědec opouští výzkum, odchází pečovat o otce a jako bonus si tajně odnáší šimpanzí mládě, jehož rodiče zemřeli při Willových pokusech. U šimpanze Caesara se postupně začne projevovat vysoká inteligence a Will zjistí, že za to zřejmě může působení jeho léku. Začne mu ho tajně podávat a tím nechtěně otevře bránu k lidské zkáze. Čím dál inteligentnější zvíře se po čase ocitne v přírodní rezervaci, kde začne v čele ostatních opic pomaloučku připravovat vzpouru proti těm, kdo zabili jeho rodiče a jeho zavřeli do tohoto „fešáckého kriminálu“. Tedy proti lidem.

Ceasar a jeho opice nemají na vybranou a vrhají se do boje s lidskou armádou. Tu vede bezohledný plukovník, který by je chtěl všechny zničit. Poté, co opice utrží obrovské ztráty, se Cesar potýká se svými temnými instinkty a začíná svou vlastní mýtickou výpravu za pomstou svého druhu. Jak vše spěje ke konci, stojí Ceasar tváří v tvář plukovníkovi v epické bitvě, která rozhodne o osudu jejich druhů a budoucnosti planety.

Světové vlády se zhroutily – a s nimi i řád a právo. Rozpadajícími se troskami měst teď bloudí takzvaní „raplové", lidé pokrytí hnisajícími ranami, které nakažlivý virus dohnal za hranu příčetnosti. Jejich jediným cílem je najít cokoliv živého, aby se nasytili. Thomas a jeho přátelé musí rychle najít bezpečné útočiště a organizace Z.L.S.N. se stará o hlavně to, aby jim šance na přežití nastavila v jejich neprospěch…

Parta mladých lidí z velkoměsta se přichází odreagovat a užít si volný týden do řídce osídlené oblasti. Po prvním kontaktu s místními obyvateli zjišťují, že nejsou zcela přívětiví, ale jejich chata se naštěstí nachází na samotě u jezera. Po příjezdu se začínají věnovat relaxu a večer zorganizují menší párty při ohýnku. Přidá se k ním i náhodný kolemjdoucí, který jim přinese marihuanu. Prý má ještě nějaké povinnosti, takže musí odejít, ale slíbí, že se o malou chvíli vrátí. Parta se přesune do chaty, a když se ozve klepání na dveře, mají všichni rádo ...
