K nejslavnějšímu dílu italské renesance (psáno bylo 1348-1353) přistoupil Pasolini velice samostatně a originálně. Zrušil například jeho rámcové podmínky, tj. situaci, kdy se deset vypravěčů - sedm vážených paní a tři jinoši - uteče před zuřící morovou nákazou roku 1348 do idylického prostředí venkovského sídla, aby holdovali dobrému jídlu, tanci, hrám a čas si krátili po deset dní vyprávěním deseti příběhů.

Prodejce papíru Michael Spurlock je nově jmenován reverendem v kostele Všech Svatých ve Smyrně v Tennessee. Ve skutečnosti je ale spíše likvidátorem, protože jeho úlohou je připravit zadlužený kostel na brzký prodej. Pak za ním ale přijde Ye Win, věřící utečenec, s tím že je tady několik rodin z Barmy, které potřebují nutnou pomoc. Michaelovi v hlavě uzraje plán, jak by se dalo rodiny i kostel zachránit. Přesvědčí radu o odkladu prodeje a společně se sboristy a utečenci založí na pozemcích kostela farmu. Ne vše jde ale tak, jak Michael očekával.
