Kvalitní přepis románu Irvinga Stone zobrazuje nejen dramatický život malíře Vincenta van Gogha, ale i celé malířské hemžení v Paříži v období rozkvětu impresionismu. Neméně přesvědčivě je podána i postava Paula Gaugina. Zajímavé jsou i rekonstrukce krajin a objektů, které tvůrci vytvořili pro natáčení podle van Goghových malířských děl. Barvité zachycení Provence řadí tento film k nezapomenutelným životopisným dílům.
Životopisný film o Lautrecovi je natočen jako portrét umělce, těsně spjatého se svou dobou i s dvojicí „protikladných“ společenských prostředí, jež spojil svým životem i uměním: s venkovskou šlechtou, z níž pocházel a v níž v nouzi nacházel zázemí, a s bohémským polosvětem pařížského Montmartru, kde tvořil a kde našel nový domov. Henri de Toulouse -Lautrec (1864-1901) se oproti přáním svého aristokratického otce nestal pokračovatelem starobylého rodu, ale kvůli svému handicapu a díky oslnivému malířskému talentu se změnil v brilantního portrétistu pozlátka i všednodenní špíny pařížských kabaretů, kankánů a bordelů a jejich slavných hvězd i bezejmenných outsiderů. Intenzivní způsob existence se stal křehkému umělci osudným, takže v sedmatřiceti letech zemřel na následky syfilidy a alkoholismu.
