Když se náš čas na Zemi začne chýlit ke konci, je skupina výzkumníků pověřena nejdůležitějším posláním v dějinách lidstva – musí se vydat mimo naši sluneční soustavu a pokusit se najít pro lidské pokolení planetu, na které bude moci žít.
Když po celém světě přistanou tajemné vesmírné lodě, je sestaven elitní tým v čele s odbornicí na lingvistiku Louise Banksovou (Amy Adamsová). Cílem je zjistit, jaké mají mimozemšťané úmysly.
Tim je naprosto obyčejný nesmělý jednadvacetiletý Brit, který má starostlivou matku, potrhlou sestru, úžasného otce a žádnou holku. Stačí zajít do nějakého tmavého koutu, zavřít oči, sevřít pěsti a jste tam, kde jste si přáli být. Tim se okamžitě rozhodne využít téhle dovednosti k tomu nejdůležitějšímu, co člověk jeho věku potřebuje.
Pro rodinu s dvěma malými dětmi to měla být dokonalá dovolená. Luxusní hotel v tropickém ráji a hoteliérův tip na tajnou pláž coby potřebná špetka dobrodružství. Na první pohled ta pláž opravdu nemá chybu – je nádherně písčitá, obklopená skalami a blankytně modré moře láká k tomu, abyste do něj okamžitě skočili. Trable v ráji se však projeví ve chvíli, kdy děti na pláži najdou opuštěné věci patřící jiným hostům hotelu a z moře vytáhnou mrtvolu. Než se z prvotního šoku vzpamatují, čeká je mnohem větší otřes – všichni náhle nevysvětlitelně rapidně stárnou.
