Důstojník Sotnikov a vojín Rybak se uprostřed kruté zimy v nacisty okupovaném Bělorusku vydávají na strastiplnou cestu za zásobami pro své soudruhy partyzány. Jejich cílem je malá vesnička, kterou však už předtím dobyli fašisté. Oba bojovníci padnou do zajetí a kromě nemilosrdného mučení musejí podstoupit také boj s vlastní morálkou a přesvědčením. A pohled do vlastního nitra se nakonec ukazuje mnohem bolestivější, než rány nepřítele.
