V roce 1981 se neznámý 19letý graffiti writer Jean-Michel Basquiat velmi rychle stal nejúspěšnějším, nejrozporuplnějším a nejfascinujícnějším umělcem světa. Jeho výstavy byly očekávané jako velké události newyorské sezóny a jeho malby kupovali nejvlivnější sběratelé a muzea. Každá stránka jeho života se stala tématem pro média. Zemřel v roce 1988, ve věku 27 let. Noviny The New York Times ho nazvali „nejbližším ekvivalentem Jamese Deana ve světě umění“. Navzdory svému úspěchu sužovala tohoto nepokojného mladého talentovaného umělce samota, sebedestrukce a přesvědčení, že lidé ho ve skutečnosti nepřijali takového, jakým byl. Byl prvním umělcem černé pleti, kterému se podařilo skutečně uspět v uměleckém světě bělochů. Jeho předčasná smrt dokazuje, že byl stejně obětí i fenomenálním úspěchem.

Série Exhibition on Screen přináší v tomto unikátním filmu soukromou prohlídku výstavy za doprovodu ředitele Rijksmusea a kurátora výstavy. Po společném výzkumu Rijksmusea a muzea Mauritshuis v Haagu zároveň hlouběji nahlédne na Vermeerovo umění, kompozici a tvůrčí proces za jeho obrazy.
