Příběh se odehrává v budoucnosti na planetě Pandora, kde lidé ze Země objeví vzácnou horninu unobtanium a rozhodnou se ji vytěžit. V cestě jim však stojí místní domorodci Na’vi. Aby pozemšťané získali jejich důvěru, vytvoří umělé tvory „avatary“, kteří vzhledem odpovídají obyvatelům planety, ale je do nich přenášeno lidské vědomí. Hlavní hrdina, ochrnutý mariňák Jake, se tak v zapůjčené podobě dostává k místnímu kmeni Omaticaya. Brzy prohlédne zpupné chování lidí, pozná kouzlo života v symbióze s přírodou a zamiluje se do dcery náčelníka Neytiri. V rozhodujícím boji o budoucnost planety se proto postaví na stranu Na’vi.

Hrůza neustává ani v tomto mrazivém, kritikou oceňovaném pokračování, kdy se Ripleyová (Sigourney Weaverová), jediná přeživší smrtelného střetu lodi Nostromo s obludným vetřelcem, vrací na Zemi poté, co 57 let plula vesmírem v hyperspánku. Přestože je zpočátku skeptická, souhlasí, že bude doprovázet tým koloniálních mariňáků zpět na LV-426… a tentokrát půjde o válku!

Při implantaci vyjde najevo, že Quaid už jedny implantované vzpomínky má. Vzápětí se ho pokusí zavraždit dva lidé, které považoval za své blízké. Nejprve přítel a vzápětí i jeho manželka Lori. Brzy poté se Quaid dovídá, že byl na Marsu zapleten do odboje proti tyranskému guvernérovi Cohaagenovi a proto se, pronásledován najatými zabijáky, na Mars vrátí, aby našel sám sebe a své vlastní vzpomínky. Okamžitě se ocitá ve víru nebezpečných událostí a stává se rozhodujícím prvkem na misce vah vleklé války mezi rebely a guvernérovou armádou.

Nastaly temné časy pro povstání. I přes to, že Hvězda smrti byla zničena, imperiální jednotky vyhnaly rebely z jejich tajné základny a pronásledovaly je po celé Galaxii.
