Jednoho dne, když krade jídlo, se nechtěně oddělí od své rodiny a dostane se přímo před restauraci nejlepšího kuchaře Gusteaua. Spřátelí se s jeho synem Linguinim, který je kuchařský neumětel. Spojí své síly a dvojici se podaří stát se kuchařskou legendou. V cestě jim ale stojí velmi zákeřný, ale zároveň slavný kritik restaurací – Anton Ego.

Chris Gardner je otec rodiny zoufale hledající takovou práci, aby dokázal uživit sebe a nejbližší. Přestože vyvíjí úsilí, aby udržel rodinu nad vodou, matka jeho syna Christophera už nedokáže vzdorovat psychickému stresu z finanční krize a po těžkém rozhodování je opustí.Chris, který je nyní svobodným otcem, se i nadále všemi možnými způsoby snaží najít lépe placenou práci. Přestože se v úvodní fázi musí obejít bez jakékoliv finanční odměny, nabídku přijme a doufá, že na konci stáže na něj čeká regulérní pracovní nabídka a s ní i slibná budoucnost. Vzhledem k nulovým příjmům je se svým synem vyhozen z bytu a donucen přespávat v útulcích pro bezdomovce, na veřejných záchodcích a na místech, kde je ten trochu možné. I přes nástrahy osudu však Chris nijak nepolevuje ve snaze být milujícím a starostlivým otcem, v čemž mu nejvíce pomáhá láska a důvěra, kterou v něj Christopher vkládá.

Popelka na tom snad nikdy nebyla tak špatně. Celý film je jako jedna malá povídka z New Jersy a vypráví o zamotaném živote jednoho prodavače. Režisér Kevin Smith zde ztvárnil roli tichého Boba, která je známa i z jeho dalších filmů.
