Bohužel mu tuto přípravu ztrpčují policejní vyšetřovatelé, kteří ctí presumpci viny a snaží se i s použitím brutální síly získat od Jamala odpověď na klíčovou otázku: Jakým podvodem se dostal krůček od pohádkového bohatství? Jamal vypráví svůj životní příběh, ze kterého vyšetřující policisté pochopí, proč zná odpovědi na všechny ty záludné soutěžní otázky.

To vzbudí zájem mladého vyšetřovatele z podvýboru pro legislativní dohled nad televizním vysíláním Dicka Goodwina, který začne rozkrývat pozadí obřího televizního skandálu.

Po určitém čase se k němu donese zpráva, že Howard Hughes zemřel a Melvina stanovil dědicem více jak 100 miliónů diolarů. Jeho život to převrátí naruby.
