Kamarádi z dětství Said a Khaled žijí v Nábulu a pracují v autodílně. Jednoho večera jim oznámí, že byli vybráni jako mučedníci k provedení atentátu v Tel Avivu. Mladíci úkol přijmou jako samozřejmost. Stráví poslední noc s rodinami, které se nesmějí nic dovědět. Ráno podstoupí ve štábu příslušné rituály a dostanou se přes drátěný plot na izraelské území. Akce se však nečekaně zhatí a oni mají ještě čas zvažovat svůj úkol.

Richard Burton hraje římského tribuna Marcella Gallia, který dostal příkaz ukřižovat Ježíše Nazaretského. Poslušen rozkazu vydá se tribun s odsouzencem na cestu ke Golgotě. Cestou postupně začíná ve skrytu duše o rozsudku pochybovat. Přesto svůj úkol splní a v kostkách pak vyhraje Kristovo roucho. Když se pak kolem kříže začnou dít podivné a nevysvětlitelné věci, s hrůzou získané roucho odhazuje. Vzápětí však dostane pokyn roucho opět najít a dopravit neprodleně do Říma. Zážitky při usilovném pátrání po Ježíšově rouchu a setkání se stoupenci ukřižovaného Ježíše způsobí, že se sám obrátí na křesťanství. V Římě je za to i se svou snoubenkou Dianou (Jean Simmonsová) odsouzen k smrti. Film se podle mínění tehdejší kritiky příliš podbízí publiku a nepřesvědčuje ani příběhem, ani jeho ztvárněním. Koster dodal rutinní produkt průměrné kvality, a tak film vzbudil pozornost především užitím nové technologie Cinemascope.

Autobiografický hrdina Ari se vydává za dávnými známými i dalšími lidmi, kteří mu mohou prozradit, jestli kdysi byl při krutých masakrech v palestinských uprchlických táborech Sabra a Šatíla. Netradiční dokument je po snímku Persepolis další animovaný film o nedávných dějinách Blízkého východu – stejně poutavý, dojemný i hrůzný.
