Mladý newyorský bankovní úředník Sam začne žít s výtvarnicí Molly. Jejich počínající šťastný život je však přerván Samovou násilnou smrtí, když jej na ulici zastřelí neznámý poberta. Ale Sam nemůže milovanou dívku opustit, a tak ji provází životem alespoň jako duch. Ze záhrobí naváže spojení se světem živých prostřednictvím bizarního média, kterým je černoška Oda Mae.
Když veterán z irácké války obdrží volání od vyšší moci, vydává se na misi, aby zastavil padlého anděla, aby vzbudil armádu mrtvých, aby ovládli svět.
Film se zaměřuje na trojici průvodců a jejich osudové propojení z budoucnosti. Děj se tak odehrává ve dvou časových rovinách (ta současná má přednost před tou, která je stará tisíc let) a přichází z mnoha nečekanými odhaleními. Také tentokrát dojde na cestu skrze posmrtné soudy, to se týká ale jen jednoho z průvodců. Zbylí dva hrdinové musí řešit ryze pozemský problém s jedním staříkem, jeho malým vnukem a duchem, který sídlí v domě.
