A postal worker falls in love with the Chinese waitress at a Chinese restaurant. They start dating and quickly fall in and out of love, the waitress returning to China. The young man looks for comfort in his father but he's too preoccupied with winning the Eurovision song contest. After listening to loser friends talk about what Sylvester Stallone would do in his situation, the postal worker decides to buy a ticket to China and follow his love to her home.
The film tells the tale of a man named Kalli, a scruffy looking 30 year old, that lives in his brother’s garage. As he wakes up hung-over on the morning of his birthday. He finds to his surprise an over sized box in his living room. Inside the box is a very unusual birthday present from his brother Teitur. As Kalli opens the box, he discovers that the gift is a woman from East-Europe, that was mailed to him. As Kalli struggles to convince his brother that giving someone a mail-order bride on their birthday is not the right thing to do, he realizes what a sociopath his brother really is. And though he doesn’t want to admit it to himself, he too has some serious women issues and does not respect them as human beings. In the end the film shows how so many men treat women like objects. Although the film deals with serious issues it does so in a light and absurd way so the laughs are plenty and never far between.

It has been nominated eight times to the Edda Awards: in 2002, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011, and it received the awards in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Independent People is produced by Steingrímur Jón Þórðarson and Sky Productions and is aired weekly early Sunday nights on Stöð 2 / Channel 2, from September until May. Jón Ársæll interviews people of all ages. His youngest was 15-year-old singer Yohanna and the oldest interviewees have been in their nineties. All the guests have a story to tell. Normally, but not always, they are also well known in Iceland.
