Familien Corleone er en stor, varmhjertet slægt af italiensk herkomst. Samtidig er familiens overhoved, Don Vito, en ledende skikkelse i mafiaen, en "gudfar", hvis magt kun begrænses af hans konkurrenter.

I 1980 ankommer cubanske Tony Montana og hans ven Manny til Miami, hvor de bluffer og myrder sig til en opholdstilladelse. Tony og Manny får job som opvaskere, men Tony har andre ambitioner. Han bliver mere og mere mistænksom over for sine omgivelser. Han mistænker alle. Hans nærmeste har enten forladt ham eller blevet skaffet af vejen?

Seks professionelle, barske forbrydere hyres til et diamant kup i den større kaliber. Planlægning og koldt overblik er afgørende, og ikke alle gruppens medlemmer er lige gode til at beherske sig. Det lykkes politiet at få placeret en agent i gruppen, men da planerne for røveriet holdes hemmeligt, kan de først rykke ud i sidste øjeblik. Det må ende galt. Tarantinos debutfilm.

Mitch´s mistro forstærkes yderligere, da FBI konfronterer ham med beviser på korruption og mord inden for firmaet. Han fanges i et djævelsk spil, hvor hvert træk han foretager, kan koste ham livet.
