"The Rum Diary" er baseret på en historie af Hunter S. Thompson og følger den omrejsende journalist Paul Kemp på en alkohol-fyldt tur gennem den uberørte ø Puerto Rico. Paul lever sig ind i livet på øen og bliver hurtigt betaget af den meget smukke Chenault. Hun er dog forlovet med Sanderson, en amerikansk forretningsmand, som er involveret i en række tvivlsomme udviklingsaftaler. Da Sanderson rekrutterer Kemp til at skrive positivt om sin nyeste usmagelige plan, skal journalisten træffe et valg: vil han bruge sine ord til den korrupte forretningsmands økonomiske fordel, eller vil han bruge dem til at fælde ham.
