Det er en stor dag på Kongesletten da løveungen Simba bliver født. En dag skal han overtage sin fars, Mufasas trone, og være „Løvernes konge“! Alle jubler undtagen Scar, Mufasas lumske bror, som gerne selv vil overtage tronen. Tiden går og den nysgerrige Simba skal først lære at tage det ansvar, som følger med når man ska være konge. Han følger sin far, får kloge råd af bavianen Rafiki og leger med kammeraten Nala. Men en dag sker det, der ikke må ske. Mufasa er pludselig væk - og inden nogen ved af det, har Scar overtaget tronen! Simba tvinges til at flygte og langt borte fra sin familie møder han Timon og Pumba, som straks bliver hans nye venner.
