Da en af deres egne mister sin kone og datter i hænderne på en seriemorder, er et hold spøgelsesjægere fast besluttet på at fange de kæres ånder, så deres ånd endelig kan hvile i fred.

Som så mange gange før er forfatteren Mike Enslin tjekket ind på et hotel. Som så mange gange før har han booket hotellets notorisk "hjemsøgte" værelse, nr. 1408. Som så mange gange før forventer Mike en lang, kedelig nat, hvor han vil få bekræftet, at spøgelseshistorierne bare er noget, hotellet bruger til at lokke kunder til. Men i nat får Mike Enslin sig en overraskelse!
