Alle familien Morgans mænd har altid arbejdet i kulminen og er derfor totalt afhængige af tidernes skiften, så da priserne falder på kulmarkedet, skærer minens ejere hårdt i arbejdernes lønninger. Så da de fleste af arbejderne går i strejke for deres ret, står Huws far, Gwilym, der ikke ønsker at strejke, pludselig alene over for både kolleger og familiemedlemmer. Konflikten strammer til, og en sen nattetime rammer tragedien for første gang for alvor familien, men det bliver ikke den sidste.
