Carl Frederiksen er en 78-årig, pensioneret ballonsælger,der bestemmer sig for at opfylde sin drøm om et storslået eventyr. Ved hjælp af tusindvis af balloner bundet fast på sit hus flyver han af sted på sit livs rejse til Sydamerika. For sent opdager Carl at hans værste mareridt, en overenergisk 8-årig spejder ved navn Robert, ved et tilfælde er havnet på Carls veranda. Verdens mest umage par støder på ufremkommeligt terræn, uventede skurke og jungleskabninger, men møder også nye venner, for eksempel Doggi, en talende hund og Kenneth, den sjældne fugl der ikke kan flyve. Fanget i junglen sammen med Robert, opdager Carl at de største eventyr i livet ikke altid er som man forventer.
