Musicalen 'In the Heights' er en filmatisering af Broadway-stykket af samme navn fra 2008. Handlingen omhandler om en række karakterer, som bor i kvarteret Washington Heights på Manhattan. Bodegaejeren Usnavi længes efter om en smuk kvinde, der arbejder i skønhedssalonen ved siden af, og drømmer om at vinde lotteriet, så han kan flytte tilbage til den Dominikanske Republiks strande. Usnavis barndomsven Nina vender tilbage til nabolaget med overraskende nyheder til hendes forældre, som har brugt hele deres livsopsparing på at forbedre deres datters liv.
