Alt ånder fred og ro i forstaden hos famlien Freeling, men freden varer ikke ved, og små uforklarlige ting sker. Uhyggen breder sig, og om natten bliver datteren tiltrukket af et mærkeligt lys fra tv'et og forsvinder. Faren tilkalder en parapsykolog og en eksorcist. De opdager, at huset ligger på en gammel kirkegård og nu bliver hjemsøgt af de hvileløse sjæle, men hvor er den lille pige?

I en afsides del af Berringshavet opdager et bjergningshold tilfældigt et forladt skib. Fartøjet har været forsvundet siden 1962 og flyder nu rundt uden besætning. Meget mystisk, men sådan et skib er jo penge værd, så de beslutter at slæbe skibet i havn i håb om penge og hæder. Bjerningsforsøget bliver hurtigt hjemsøgt at en række mere eller mindre bizare uheld, der munder ud i at en gruppe bliver fanget inde i det sælsomme skib. Langsomt opstår mistanken om at skibet er hjemsted for en dæmonisk skabning, og redningsholdet fortryder at de ikke blev hjemme.
