Mens forældrene kaster sig over maden, fornemmer Chihiro en fare og som mørket falder på oplever hun til sin skræk, at området er fyldt med ånder og hendes forældre forheksede. Snart får hun hjælp af den mystiske dreng Haku i et overdådigt eventyr fyldt med spænding, sjov og uhygge

Alle verdens monstre bor i Monstropolis. Byen får sin energi fra Scream Heat, der indsamler børns skrig. Imidlertid er børn ikke længere så nemme at skræmme, så Monstropolis står overfor en energikrise. Derfor får den førende fremkalder af skrig, det store blå monster Sully, den krævende opgave at løse problemet. Det bliver ikke nemmere, da hans rivaler Henry J.
