Historien foregår på den fremmedartede og tryllebindende måne kaldet Pandora. Her lever mere end tre meter høje, blå, menneskelignende væsner, Na'vi. Denne fremmede verden er rig på fantasifulde landskaber, væsener og ukendt beplantning. Mennesker kan ikke ånde den pandoriske luft, så de udvikler genetiske hybrider af mennesker, kaldet avatarer, som kan kontrolleres via en mental forbindelse på jorden. Avatar er historien om den tidligere soldat, Jack, der i skikkelse af sin avatar kastes ud på endannelsesrejse gennem Pandoras forunderlige verden.

Igen og igen har Douglas Quaid den samme drøm om Mars. For at udleve drømmen opsøger han firmaet Total Recall, der kan sælger virtuelle drømmeferier. Under besøget bliver Quaid angrebet, og herefter tager tingene for alvor fart. Quaid beslutter at søge svar på sine mange spørgsmål i kolonien på Mars. Men er det hele drøm eller virkelighed?

Ripley styrter ned på planeten Fiorina 161, en nu nedlagt straffeplanet, hvor kun en håndfuld fanger er blevet tilbage og arbejder i det enorme stålvalseværk.
