Den aldrende nyhedsoplæser Howard Beale erfarer, at han kun har to uger tilbage på arbejdet grundet dalende seertal. I vrede og fuldskab annoncerer han, at han vil begå selvmord for åben skærm. Hvorfor ikke, nu hvor der ikke er nogen der lytter? Han må selvfølgelig trække ordene i sig igen, men nu har nyhedsredaktionen fået blod på tanden og øjner en publikumsmagnet i Howard Beale. I løbet af de næste uger opnår Beale heltestatus som en slags missionær og talerør, der siger ligeud, hvad folket mener om det amerikanske samfund og om verdenssituationen – direkte på tv! Men i en tid hvor der ikke er nogen skrupler, hvordan vil cheferne holde seertallene høje?

Den mytiske grev Dracula inviterer den unge advokat Harker til Transylvanien for at diskurterer omfattende ejendomskøb i London. Slottet er mere end almindeligt skummelt og Greven viser sig at være vampyr med planer om at overtage verden med start i London. Situationen kommer for alvor ud af kontrol da den spidstandede blodsuger ankommer til millionbyen.

New York. Connie og Edward er et lykkeligt forstadsægtepar. Da Connie indleder en affære med en ung fyr fra Greenwich Village, hyrer Edward en detektiv til at skygge hende. Edward konfronterer den unge fyr og gør noget han ikke skulle have gjort. Ægteskabet får efterfølgende nyt liv, men det bliver straks sværere at holde stand overfor verden udenfor.

Forfatteren Mort bliver skilt og tager ud i sin hytte i bjergene for at få lidt fred og ro. Desværre bliver han opsporet af den noget uligevægtige John Shooter, der påstår at Mort har stjålet hans ideer og publiceret dem som sine egne. En sørgelig misforståelse tror Mort i starten, men så begynder der at ske underlige ting i hytten.

I midten af 1800-tallet rejser en ung enke fra Skotland til New Zealand, hvor hun har aftalt giftermål med en mand, hun aldrig har set. Med sig har hun sin datter, lidt bagage - samt sit dyrebare klaver.

Et filmhold er forsvundet under en ekspedition ind i Amazonas uvejsomme jungle. Det eneste spor er en enkel filmrulle, der finder vej tilbage til civilisationen.
