Den strenge og principfaste rektor på Saint Nicholas Church School, Søster Aloysius Beauvier (Streep), har meget svært ved at acceptere sognets radikale men meget populære præst Fader Flynn (Hoffman). Da hun får at vide, at præsten giver én speciel dreng ekstra opmærksomhed, er hun overbevist om at hun er på sporet af en mørk hemmelighed, men da der mangler beviser står kun tvivlen tilbage...

Den succesrige bankmand Max Skinner arver sin onkels sydfranske vingård, hvor han plejede at holde sommerferie som barn. Max øjner en god fortjeneste, hvis han kan sælge vingården, men mødet med to smukke kvinder truer med at vende op og ned på den kyniske finansmands planer.

De to søstre Rose og Maggie Feller er meget forskellige. Rose er den stille og diskrete type, der kæmper for at få en karriere i et advokatfirma, mens Maggie er en rigtig party-pige, der hele tiden skifter kærester og jobs.
