Στο μέλλον, μετά τη βασιλεία του Καίσαρα, οι πίθηκοι είναι το κυρίαρχο είδος και ζουν αρμονικά μεταξύ τους ενώ οι άνθρωποι ζουν περιορισμένοι και κρυμμένοι. Καθώς ένας νέος τύραννος ηγέτης πίθηκος χτίζει την αυτοκρατορία του, ένας νεαρός πίθηκος ξεκινά ένα οδυνηρό ταξίδι που θα τον κάνει να αμφισβητήσει όλα όσα γνώριζε για το παρελθόν και να κάνει επιλογές που θα καθορίσουν το μέλλον τόσο για τους πιθήκους όσο και για τους ανθρώπους.
Τρεις αστροναύτες ξυπνούν από κρυογονική στάση όταν το διαστημόπλοιό τους συντρίβεται σε ένα πλανήτη. Σύντομα θα ανακαλύψουν ότι ο πλανήτης κατοικείται από εξελιγμένους νοήμονες πιθήκους και ανθρώπους που δεν έχουν αναπτύξει την ομιλία.
Μια απελπισμένη ομάδα προσφύγων προσπαθεί να επαναποικίσει τη Γη 20.000 χρόνια μετά την κατάληψή της απ' τον Γκοτζίλα. Αλλά η μόνη επιθυμία ενός νεαρού είναι η εκδίκηση.
Ο αστροναύτης Μπρεντ στέλνεται για να διασώσει τον Τέηλορ (μοναδικό επιζών της προηγούμενης αποστολής) αλλά το διαστημόπλοιό του επίσης συντρίβεται στον πλανήτη των πιθήκων. Όταν μάθει ότι ο Τέηλορ έχει εξαφανιστεί στην Απαγορευμένη Ζώνη θα προσπαθήσει να τον ακολουθήσει για να τον βρει με την βοήθεια της Νόβα. Εκεί θα ανακαλύψει μια υπόγεια πόλη που κατοικείται από εξελιγμένους ανθρώπους με τηλεκινητικές δυνάμεις.
Την τελευταία μέρα του 1899 ένας Βικτωριανός επιστήμονας, επιδεικνύει στους φίλους του μια μινιατούρα της μηχανής που έχει εφεύρει. Μιας μηχανής που ταξιδεύει στο χρόνο. Προσπαθεί να εξηγήσει την ύπαρξη της τέταρτης διάστασης αλλά οι φίλοι του δείχνουν σκεπτικοί, φαίνεται να μην τον πιστεύουν. Παρ’ όλα αυτά δέχονται την πρόσκλησή του για δείπνο, σε μια βδομάδα, όπου θα τους διηγηθεί τις περιπέτειές του απ’ το ταξίδι στο μέλλον με τους απόγονους της ανθρωπότητας.
Έτος 2274 κι επιφανειακά η κοινωνία είναι τέλεια. Κλεισμένοι από έναν τεράστιο θόλο, οι κάτοικοι έχουν ελάχιστη ως καθόλου εργασία κι απλά απολαμβάνουν τη ζωή τους. Όμως, όταν κάποιος φτάνει τα 30, μέσω μια θρησκευτικής τελετής η ζωή τερματίζεται. Κάποιοι, γνωστοί ως «δρομείς», αντιστέκονται αλλά υπάρχει ασφάλεια που τους βρίσκει και τους εξοντώνει. Ένας από τους κατοίκους, ο Λόγκαν, παίρνει εντολή να κάνει τον δρομέα, να βγει από τον θόλο και να βρει τρόπο να εξοντωθεί η αποικία των επαναστατών. Όταν, όμως, φτάνει εκεί μαζί με μια βοηθό του, βλέπει πως άλλος είναι ο ιδεατός κόσμος.
Ο χρόνος: Το κοντινό μέλλον, όπου το πιο πολύτιμο αγαθό, είναι το νερό. Ο τελευταίος πλανήτης εν ζωή, έχει μετατοπιστεί στο απρόσιτο κέντρο του γαλαξία, κατά την διάρκεια των εμπορικών πολέμων.
