Λίγο προτού κλείσει τα τριάντα ένας πολλά υποσχόμενος νεαρός θεατρικός συνθέτης βιώνει τον έρωτα, την φιλία και την πίεση να δημιουργήσει κάτι μεγάλο πριν να είναι αργά.

Ο Φρεντ και ο Μικ, δύο παλιόφιλοι, βρίσκονται για διακοπές σε ένα πολυτελές ξενοδοχείο στις παρυφές των Άλπεων. Ο Φρεντ, συνθέτης και μαέστρος, τα έχει παρατήσει. Ο δε Μικ, σκηνοθέτης κινηματογράφου, εργάζεται ακόμα. Και οι δύο αντιμετωπίζουν με περιέργεια και τρυφερότητα τις ζωές των παιδιών τους, τους ενθουσιώδεις σεναριογράφους του Μικ, αλλά και τους υπόλοιπους ένοικους του ξενοδοχείου. Την ώρα που ο Μικ πασχίζει να τελειώσει το σενάριο για μια ταινία που προσδοκά να είναι η καλύτερη του, ο Φρεντ δεν δείχνει διάθεση να αναπολήσει τη μουσική του καριέρα. Αλλά υπάρχει κάποιος που με κάθε κόστος θέλει να τον δει ξανά να διευθύνει ορχήστρα.
