Η αυτοκράτειρα της Αυστρίας ταξιδεύει στην Ουγγαρία και βρίσκει πολιτική συμπαράσταση από τον κόμη Αντράσι, κάτι που της λείπει στην δική της αυλή. Μια θανατηφόρα ασθένεια διαγνώνεται στην Σίσι και τα πάντα αλλάζουν.

Η τελική έκρηξη του όχλου, βάναυση και χυδαία, θα οδηγήσει σε μια νέα εξουσιαστική τάξη πραγμάτων. Ο νεαρός, αλαφροΐσκιωτος ταχυδρόμος Βαλούσκα, θα γίνει μάρτυρας της αποσάθρωσης της μικρής κοινωνίας και των μικρότερων ταπεινών φιλοδοξιών και παθών των συμπολιτών του.
