Ένα 12χρονο αγόρι χάνει τη μητέρα του στον Β’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο και καταφεύγει με τη μητριά του στην εξοχή για να αρχίσει μια νέα ζωή. Η φύση κάνει μια αναπάντεχη παύση για να του επιτρέψει να θρηνήσει, ώσπου το αγόρι, καθοδηγούμενο από έναν μυστηριώδη ασημένιο ερωδιό, που μπορεί και μιλά, διαρρηγνύει τη λεπτή μεμβράνη που διαχωρίζει τον κόσμο των ζωντανών από τους νεκρούς.

Ο Ti είναι ένας φτωχός πατέρας που δουλεύει πολύ σκληρά για να εξασφαλίσει στον γιο του Dicky Chow την φοίτησή του σε ένα καλό ιδιωτικό σχολείο. Όταν μια μέρα ο γιος του, του ζητήσει ένα νέο παιχνίδι, ο Ti θα ψάξει να το βρει στα σκουπίδια καθώς δεν του περισσεύουν χρήματα για παιχνίδια. Εκεί θα βρει ένα περίεργο αντικείμενο που μοιάζει με σφαίρα και θα το πάει στο γιο του. Προς μεγάλη του έκπληξη το αντικείμενο αυτό θα εξελιχθεί σε ένα είδους κατοικίδιου με υπερφυσικές ικανότητες.
