Σε μια παραθαλάσσια πόλη, το Άμιτι, λίγο πριν την 4η Ιουλίου, ημέρα εθνικής εορτής των Αμερικανών, ένα νεαρό κορίτσι δέχεται επίθεση από καρχαρία. Η πόλη αναστατώνεται, αλλά λόγω της επερχόμενης εορτής κανείς δεν θέλει να λάβει μέτρα με το ρίσκο να χαλάσει το κλίμα. Αν και ο αρχηγός της αστυνομίας επιμένει να κλείσουν οι παραλίες, ο δήμαρχος αρνείται. Όταν ο αριθμός των θυμάτων αρχίζει να αυξάνεται, το κυνήγι του καρχαρία θα περάσει σε ιδιωτικά χέρια. Ένας ειδικός στους καρχαρίες και ένας έμπειρος καπετάνιος, αναχωρούν για να σκοτώσουν τον καρχαρία, πρωτού προκαλέσει κι άλλα προβλήματα.
