Ο Τζιμ Ντάγκλας είναι ένας καλοσυνάτος αλλά μάλλον αποτυχημένος οδηγός ράλι που ζει σε έναν παλιό πυροσβεστικό σταθμό με τον, συνήθως μεθυσμένο, μηχανικό του. Μια μέρα θα δει ένα μικρό Φοξβάγκεν κατσαριδάκι, το οποίο δεν είναι καθόλου συνηθισμένο. Το αυτοκινητάκι έχει μυαλό σαν άνθρωπος, κινείται μόνο του κι έχει συναισθήματα. Το κατσαριδάκι θα πάει στο σπίτι του Τζιμ κι ενώ αυτός αρχικά πιστεύει πως είναι σαμποτάζ από έναν δόλιο επιχειρηματία. Όμως, οι δυο τους γρήγορα θα γίνουν φίλοι και «συνέταιροι» στους αγώνες.
