Το 1938, ο Γουόλτερ Νεφ, ένας έμπειρος ασφαλιστής συναντά τη Φύλις Ντίτριχσον σύζυγο ενός από τους πελάτες του με την οποία συνάπτει ερωτική σχέση. Η Φίλις του προτείνει να τη βοηθήσει να σκοτώσει το σύζυγό της, κάνοντας το φόνο να φανεί ως ατύχημα προκειμένου να ξεγελάσουν τις αρχές και την ασφαλιστική εταιρία, ώστε να λάβει την αποζημίωση που της αναλογεί από την ασφάλεια ζωής του συζύγου της. Ο Γουόλτερ σκαρφίζεται ένα σχέδιο σύμφωνα με το οποίο η γυναίκα πρόκειται να λάβει διπλή αποζημίωση, με βάσει μια δικλείδα του συμβολαίου του συζύγου της. Όταν ο κύριος Ντίτριχσον βρίσκεται νεκρός στις ράγες του τρένου, η αστυνομία δέχεται ότι ο φόνος προκλήθηκε από ατύχημα, αλλά Μπάρτον Κις, φίλος και συνεργάτης του Νεφ στην ασφαλιστική εταιρία έχε άλλη άποψη, καθώς υποπτεύεται ότι η Φίλις σκότωσε το σύζυγό της με τη βοήθεια ενός άλλου άνδρα.
