Ο 78χρονος Καρλ Φρέντρικσεν, ένας συνταξιούχος πωλητής μπαλονιών, παίρνει τη µεγάλη απόφαση να πραγματοποιήσει το όνειρο της ζωής του: δένει στο σπίτι του χιλιάδες μπαλόνια και πετάει προς τα άγρια τοπία της Νότιας Αµερικής. Στην πορεία όµως ανακαλύπτει ότι δεν είναι µόνος… Μαζί του βρίσκεται ο μεγαλύτερος «εφιάλτης», ένας 8χρονος λαθρεπιβάτης που ακούει στο όνομα Ράσελ, και που θέλει επίσης να εξερευνήσει το άγνωστο.
