Αφού δέχεται ένα απροσδόκητο κάλεσμα από τους προγόνους της που την καθοδηγούν, η Βαϊάνα ξεκινά ένα ταξίδι μαζί με τον Μαουί και ένα νέο πλήρωμα προς τις μακρινές θάλασσες της Ωκεανίας και σε επικίνδυνα, χαμένα νερά για μια περιπέτεια που δεν έχει ξαναζήσει ποτέ.
Όταν μια μεγάλη πλημμύρα καταστρέφει το σπίτι της Γάτας, εκείνη βρίσκει καταφύγιο σε ένα σκάφος που κατοικείται από διάφορα ζώα, με τα οποία θα πρέπει να συνεργαστεί παρά τις διαφορές τους. Με την κιβωτό τους, που πλέει μέσα σε μυστηριώδη πλημμυρισμένα τοπία, αντιμετωπίζουν τις προκλήσεις και τους κινδύνους της προσαρμογής σε αυτόν τον καινούριο, υδάτινο κόσμο.

Η μεγάλη πλημμύρα έχει την ανθρωπότητα να μένει σε κάποια ειδικά διαμορφωμένα κοραλιογεννή νησιά τα οποία οι ίδιοι έφτιαξαν. Οι κάτοικοι των νησιών αυτών απειλούνται συνεχώς από τη συμμορία των “Σμόκερς” οι οποίοι λεηλατούν ότι βρίσκουν μπροστά τους. Οι κάτοικοι των νησιών έχουν αποθέσει όλες τις ελπίδες τους σε έναν άνδρα, τον ήρωα Μάρινερ. Ο Μάρινερ συγκρούεται με τους “Σμόκερς” και τον αδίστακτο αρχηγό τους Ντίκον και μαζί με μια ατίθαση κοπέλα αποφασίζουν να βρουν το μέρος απ’ όπου θα κάνουν μια καινούρια αρχή…
Μια ομάδα υποθαλάσσιας άντλησης πετρελαίου επιστρατεύεται για να οργανώσει μια επιχείρηση διάσωσης όταν ένα πυρηνικό υποβρύχιο βυθίζεται μυστηριωδώς. Χαρακτήρες από διαφορετικό υπόβαθρο αναμιγνύονται όταν το αεροπλάνο με το οποίο ταξιδεύουν πέφτει στον Ειρηνικό Ωκεανό. Ακολουθεί ένας εφιαλτικός αγώνας για επιβίωση με την παροχή αέρα να τελειώνει και τους κινδύνους να εισχωρούν από όλες τις πλευρές.
