Το 1977, κατά τη διάρκεια της στρατιωτικής δικτατορίας της Βραζιλίας, ο Μαρσέλο, ένας δάσκαλος, δραπετεύει από το ταραχώδες παρελθόν του, και εγκαθίσταται ως φυγάς στην πόλη Ρεσίφε, όπου ελπίζει να χτίσει μια νέα ζωή και να επανενωθεί με τον γιο του.
