Mathilda (Natalie Portman) on noor, 13. aastane, tüdruk. Kartmatu tüdruku elu muutub aga kardinaalselt kui ta vanemad, õde ning vend tapetakse. Ise mõrtsukate eest põgenedes leiab ta varjupaika teise profesionaalse palgamõrtsuka, Leoni (Jean Reno) juures. Leon tegutseb üksi, osavalt, haudvaikselt ning märkamatult - ta ei jää kunagi vahele ning üksi elades ei saa keegi ka ta lähedaste kaudu teda kätte, isegi mitte tema vaenlased. Leon tahab Mathildast kiiresti vabaneda, kuid tüdruk leiab temas üles hellad kohad ning suudab ta ümber veenda.
